‘Going The Extra Mile’ by Bella Starling & Workshops for Women

Our next moment comes from Bella Starling and Workshops for Women. They tell us about their moment below…

“On Thursday 27th October the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) held ‘Going the Extra Mile: North West’, a day to look at public and patient involvement in research following on from the publishing of their report ‘Going the Extra Mile: Improving the Nation’s Health and Wellbeing through Public Involvement in Research’. In attendance were 60 people from health, research, and public engagement backgrounds from across Greater Manchester and a few from further afield such as Liverpool and Blackpool.

Workshops for Women teamed up with Bella Starling, Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellow, to deliver a workshop around ‘developing peer support networks’ and ‘facilitating as well as delivering’, two key principles from the report. The workshop facilitated a creative way for participants to explore the principles (through the construction of poems), whilst also enabling participants to work collaboratively as their own peer support network. This experience will be fed into strategies moving forward on how to engage diverse communities (rather than just specific individuals) in research, in keeping with the report’s vision of: “A population actively involved in research to improve health and wellbeing for themselves, their family and their communities.”

Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with Professor Mark Gabbay, Director NIHR CLAHRC NWC and Associate Director NIHR Research Design Service NW commenting:

“There was so much positivity in the room and so much engagement in itself””

Thank you very much to Bella and Workshops for Women for submitting this lovely and impactive moment!
